This report will allow you to understand how your practice compares to other practices in your United States region.

We hear small architectural practice owners ask all the time, “How do I know I'm charging the right fees? What are my competitors charging?”

One of the most difficult parts of running an architectural practice is making sure you’re getting the right fee for the job.  Guessing can be risky.  If you under-charge, you get to the end of the fee and there still tends to be more job left to complete.  Then you find yourself robbing Peter (a more profitable project) to pay Paul (a less profitable project).

On the other hand, you don’t want to charge your clients more than you actually need in order to complete the project.  So how do you approach your fees in a way that makes the most sense?

Business of Architecture has been hearing this plea for over a decade and decided to remedy this long-overdue issue within the industry by creating The Architectural Fee Report.  This report will provide current, accurate, location-specific fee information you need to guide billing decisions at your practice.

The map includes 18 United States regional divisions that most accurately reflect differences in populations and the markets they serve. What was the survey sample size and when was the survey?
In collaboration with A3K Consulting, AEC Management Solutions, AMI, ArchMark, BQE Software, F9 Productions, and others, Business of Architecture collected data from more than 500 small architectural practice owners in November of 2022. Approximately 80% of the data collected came from respondents located within the United States with approximately 20% of the data coming from respondents in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
How is this different than the annual AIA Firm Survey Report?
The AIA Firm Survey Report delivers information from a similar sample size (more than 500 firms). This report provides details such as general industry trends, economic impacts, practice and technology trends, and more.  What sets The Architectural Fee Report apart from this is the detailed data on billing method based on project type, as well as how practices structure their fees according to that project type.

This report will allow you to understand how your practice compares to other practices in your region. You will find current, accurate, location-specific fee information you need to guide billing decisions at your practice.  You will see you might be charging too little, receive reassurance that you are right where you need to be, or that you are excelling in the industry and know you are contributing to the overall change we need and hope to see industry-wide.
What if I'm located outside of the United States?
We did not feel there was a large enough sample size to accurately portray data outside of the United States for the first edition of this report.  As we receive more data globally, The Architectural Fee Report will continue to update and expand on a yearly basis, including more global data in future editions. If you would like any of the data from our small sample size outside of the United States, email support@businessofarchitecture.com and include the country of your location.
What if I participated in the survey but did not receive the discount code?
First thing's first, please check your spam. When responding to the survey back in November 2022, we provided two opportunities for you to include an email address in order to receive the discount. If you did not find the email with the discount code in your spam, email support@businessofarchitecture.com and include any possible e-mail address you may have used when filling out the survey. We will check our list for your submission and get back to you as quickly as possible. We don't want you to miss out on the special offer!
